What Is Stamped Concrete?

Stamped concrete lets you get the look of stone, brick, slate, or tile without actually using those materials. We pour regular concrete, then press patterns into it while it's still wet. The result looks like expensive natural stone but costs a fraction of the price and requires way less maintenance.

We can also add color to match any aesthetic you're going for. Want a patio that looks like weathered limestone? We can do that. Prefer the look of red brick pavers? We can do that too. The patterns and colors available today are incredibly realistic.

Here in Highlands Ranch, stamped concrete has become really popular for patios, pool decks, walkways, and entryways. People want something that looks good without spending every weekend on maintenance. Stamped concrete delivers both.

Design Options and Patterns

The variety of patterns we can create is pretty amazing. Here are some of the most popular options:

  • Ashlar slate for a natural stone look with irregular shapes
  • Cobblestone for a classic European courtyard feel
  • Random stone for a more organic, natural appearance
  • Brick patterns including herringbone and running bond
  • Wood plank for a rustic boardwalk look
  • Tile patterns for a Mediterranean style
  • Seamless texture stamps for a subtle, natural surface

Color is just as important as pattern. We can use integral color mixed into the concrete, color hardener applied to the surface, or stains and dyes for more complex color schemes. You can go with natural earth tones, cool grays, warm reds, or even custom color blends.

We can also combine different patterns and colors in one project. Maybe you want a border in one pattern and the main area in another. Or different colors to define spaces. We'll show you samples and help you design something that fits your home and your style.

How We Install Stamped Concrete

Stamped concrete is more involved than a standard concrete patio, but the process isn't complicated. It just requires skill and timing.

Base Preparation

We start the same way we do any concrete project. Proper excavation, a solid gravel base, compaction, and forms set to the right grade. This foundation work is critical. If the base isn't right, even the most beautiful stamped pattern won't matter because the concrete will crack or settle.

Concrete Pour and Finishing

We pour the concrete and work it into place, making sure it's level and properly consolidated. If we're using integral color, that's already mixed in. If we're using color hardener, we broadcast that onto the surface once the concrete starts to set.

Timing is everything with stamped concrete. The concrete needs to be firm enough to hold the pattern but soft enough to take the impression. We watch the weather, the temperature, and the concrete itself to know exactly when to start stamping.

Stamping Process

We apply a release agent to prevent the stamps from sticking, then carefully press the stamp mats into the concrete. Each stamp has to line up perfectly with the next one. Any mistake shows up in the final pattern, so this step requires concentration and experience.

Once the stamping is done, we let the concrete cure. After a few days, we clean off the release agent and apply a sealer. The sealer protects the color, makes the surface easier to clean, and gives it either a matte, satin, or glossy finish depending on what you prefer.

Other Decorative Concrete Options

Stamped concrete isn't the only way to make concrete look great. Here are some other decorative techniques we use.

Stained Concrete: We apply acid stains or water-based stains to create rich, variegated colors. Stains penetrate the concrete and create unique patterns that never look exactly the same twice. This works great for interior floors and exterior patios.

Exposed Aggregate: We wash away the surface layer of concrete to expose the decorative stones underneath. This creates a textured, natural look that's very durable and slip-resistant. It's popular for driveways, pool decks, and walkways.

Colored Concrete: We mix pigment directly into the concrete before pouring. The color goes all the way through, so it won't wear off. You can choose from dozens of standard colors or we can custom-match a specific shade.

Engraved Concrete: For existing concrete, we can use special saws to cut patterns into the surface. This is a great way to upgrade a plain slab without tearing it out.

Maintenance and Care

One of the best things about decorative concrete is how easy it is to maintain. You don't have to reset pavers or replace individual stones. You don't have to worry about weeds growing between joints. Just keep it clean and reseal it every few years.

Sweep or blow off leaves and debris regularly. Hose it down when it gets dirty. For tougher stains, use a mild detergent and a scrub brush. Avoid harsh chemicals or power washing at high pressure, as that can damage the sealer.

Resealing is the most important maintenance task. We recommend resealing every 2-3 years, depending on traffic and weather exposure. You can do it yourself or we can handle it for you. It's a simple process that keeps your concrete looking new and protected from stains and moisture.
