Why Choose Concrete for Your Patio?
Your backyard should be a place where you relax, entertain, and make memories. A concrete patio gives you exactly that. Unlike wood decks that rot, warp, and need constant maintenance, a properly installed concrete patio lasts for decades with minimal upkeep. You won't be staining it every year or replacing boards. You'll just be enjoying it.
Here in Highlands Ranch, we see all kinds of weather. Hot summers, cold winters, and everything in between. Concrete handles it all. It doesn't fade in the sun like composite decking. It doesn't get slippery when wet like some pavers. It just sits there, solid and reliable, year after year.
We've been building concrete patios in this area for years, and we've learned what works. It's not just about pouring concrete and calling it done. The base prep matters. The thickness matters. The slope for drainage matters. Get those things right, and your patio will be something your grandkids use.
Design Options That Fit Your Style
Some people think concrete means boring gray slabs. That's not even close to what's possible today. We can create patios that look like natural stone, brick, slate, or even wood planks. Stamped concrete gives you the high-end look without the high-end maintenance.
Here's what we can do with your patio:
- Standard broom finish for a classic, slip-resistant surface
- Stamped patterns that mimic stone, tile, or brick
- Colored concrete in earth tones, grays, or custom shades
- Exposed aggregate for texture and visual interest
- Smooth trowel finish for a modern, clean look
- Decorative borders and accent bands
Want something really custom? We can combine finishes, add curves, create multiple levels, or integrate fire pits and seating walls. Your patio should match your home and your lifestyle. We'll work with you to design something that fits both.
How We Build Patios That Last
The difference between a patio that lasts 10 years and one that lasts 50 years comes down to how it's built. We don't cut corners. We start with proper excavation and grading. The ground needs to be compacted solid. Any soft spots or organic material gets removed.
Then we bring in a gravel base and compact that too. This gives the concrete something stable to sit on. It also helps with drainage so water doesn't pool under your patio. In Colorado, where we get freeze-thaw cycles, this step is critical.
We use rebar or wire mesh for reinforcement. This keeps the concrete from cracking as the ground shifts. We also install control joints in the right places. Concrete will crack. That's just physics. But with control joints, we control where those cracks happen, and they become part of the design instead of an eyesore.
The finishing work matters too. We slope the patio slightly away from your house so water runs off instead of pooling. We cure the concrete properly so it reaches full strength. And if you're getting stamped or decorative concrete, we seal it to protect the color and pattern.
Sizing and Layout Considerations
How big should your patio be? That depends on how you'll use it. A small café table and two chairs need less space than a full outdoor dining set and a grill. We typically recommend at least 12x12 feet for basic seating, 16x20 feet for dining and entertaining, and larger for kitchens or multiple zones.
Think about traffic flow too. You want enough room to walk around furniture without feeling cramped. If you're connecting to a door, make sure there's a clear path. We can help you plan the layout so everything flows naturally.
Location matters. South-facing patios get more sun. North-facing ones stay cooler. Trees provide shade but drop leaves and can lift concrete with their roots over time. We'll walk your property with you and point out what to consider before we finalize the plan.
Maintenance and Long-Term Care
One of the best things about concrete patios is how little maintenance they need. Sweep them off occasionally. Rinse with a hose if they get dirty. That's about it for regular care.
If you have a sealed patio, you'll want to reseal it every few years. This keeps the color vibrant and protects against stains. It's a simple process you can do yourself or we can handle for you.
If you ever do get a crack, don't panic. Small cracks are normal and don't mean your patio is failing. We offer concrete repair services to fix any issues that come up over the years. But with proper installation, you shouldn't see major problems for decades.
